Best Time to Trade Gold (XAUUSD) by Session

Gold does not have one best hour. It has a session map. Here is how Asia, London, the overlap and late New York differ, in UTC and New York time.

The best time to trade gold is the window where your setup has enough movement to reach a target before the spread and the noise eat it, and where you are awake enough to follow the stop. For many intraday XAUUSD plans that window is the London and New York overlap. It is not the only valid window, and it is not a guarantee. Asia often builds the range. London often makes the first expansion. Late New York and the rollover are when a lot of traders should stop.

Spot XAUUSD is an OTC price at your broker, not a single exchange bell. The hours below are the desk conventions used to describe that week. They are not a statistic about how many dollars gold "always" moves. If you need a number, measure your own sessions and write it in the journal. Do not borrow one from a thumbnail.

Gold's 24h session map (UTC and New York)

Retail gold typically trades from the Sunday open to the Friday close, in line with the forex week. CME Group publishes a separate schedule for gold futures, including a daily break. Many retail platforms also show a thin or wide-spread period around 17:00 New York, which is when a lot of brokers roll the trading day. Check your contract specification and cmegroup.com if you trade futures. Holiday sessions are shorter. Assume nothing on a bank holiday.

A practical map, using standard time and daylight time separately so the clocks are not mixed:

London's clock and New York's clock do not switch on the same Sunday. For a week or two in March and again in autumn, the overlap in UTC moves by an hour relative to one of the cities. If your platform server is set to a third time zone, convert from the server, not from memory. TradYX Market Sessions draws Asia, London, and New York on the gold chart so the boxes move with the clock you trade, instead of a handwritten UTC note that went stale in March.

The table is a planning tool. Your broker's daily break, your prop firm's flat-before-news rule, and your own sleep are part of the map too. A "best session" you cannot attend is not your best session.

Asia: range building

The Asian session, in the example window above, is when gold often digests the previous New York move rather than starting a new campaign. Liquidity is thinner than it will be in London. Spreads at some brokers are a little wider than they will be at the overlap, though "a little" is something you should read off your own platform, not take from a blog.

What Asia is good for: marking a high and a low you will not move later. That range is the reference for the Asian range breakout. If you trade inside the range, you are fading the edges. If you trade the break, you are waiting for London to challenge those edges. Both plans need the lines drawn before the break, which means the work happens in Asia even if the order happens later.

What Asia is poor for, as a default: forcing a trend trade because you are free in the evening and London is not. A drift from one side of a $4 range to the other can look like a trend on a five-minute chart and still be noise relative to the London move that follows. Example, not a measurement: a range that is already large by the time London opens leaves less room for a breakout target. "Large" has to be defined from your log. This article will not invent an average Asia range.

If you do trade Asia, write the session tag and the spread. A month of those rows will tell you whether your Asia trades belong in the plan or only in the marking routine. Until you have that sample, treat Asia as preparation.

London open: first expansion

London is where the gold week often stops being a range and starts being a direction, at least for the next few hours. The open itself, the first minutes after 08:00 London, is also where a lot of stops from Asia sit. That is why the first push can be a probe through the Asia high or low that fails, and why chasing the first candle is a common way to donate the day's risk budget.

A conservative way to use the open:

  • Levels are already on the chart from the daily, the four-hour, and the Asia range. The method is in support and resistance on XAUUSD.
  • You do not enter on the first spike through a level. You wait for a close beyond it and a retest, or for a sweep back inside, depending on the written plan.
  • You know, before 08:00 London, whether a European or UK release is on the calendar. A level break into a release is not the same trade as a level break in a quiet open.

The first 60 to 90 minutes are enough for many traders. If your setup has not printed by then, "London" is not an excuse to invent a second setup. Standing down is a result you can journal. It is not a missed life.

London–New York overlap: prime window

The overlap is the stretch when London is still active and New York has arrived. In the table, that is roughly 08:00 to 11:30 New York, which is 13:00–16:30 UTC in winter and 12:00–15:30 UTC in summer. US data that moves gold — inflation prints, labor data, and many Fed headlines — is often scheduled inside or near this morning. The mechanism is covered in what moves the gold price: real yields and the dollar, not the candle color by itself.

This is the prime window because participation is highest and the moves are more likely to follow through than a midnight wiggle. It is also the window where overtrading is easiest. Three setups can appear before lunch. Your loss limit does not triple because the chart is busy. Decide a maximum number of trades before the overlap starts. Two is a serious number. "As many as look good" is how a good hour becomes a red day.

Spreads are often tightest when both centers are active, and they can gap wider in the seconds around a release. If your plan is a five-minute scalp, the spread at the release can be the whole target. Either you have a rule to be flat several minutes before the number, or you accept that the first print is not your trade. Write which one you chose. Do not decide while the spread is blinking.

Prop-firm traders should read the firm's news rule before they treat the overlap as mandatory. Some evaluations restrict trading around high-impact events. The overlap is exactly where those events cluster. A payout rule beats a textbook session.

Late New York and rollover: when to stop

After London closes, gold can still move, especially if New York spent the morning in a trend and the afternoon is a retracement. It can also die. The late session is where traders who missed the overlap try to recreate it on a slower tape. The usual result is a stop that would have been fine at 09:30 New York and is too tight at 15:30, or a target that the remaining range cannot pay.

Rollover, around 17:00 New York at many brokers, is a hard stop for most intraday plans. Spreads widen, quotes can jump, and a stop that looked safe at 16:50 can fill worse than the chart suggested. You do not need a horror story to justify the rule. You need the contract spec and one week of watching the spread at that hour on your own platform. If it widens, you are flat before it does.

Friday afternoon adds weekend gap risk if you hold. Spot gold reopens Sunday. The gap can be small or it can be the distance of a normal stop. If your plan is intraday, Friday's rule is the same as rollover's rule: be flat. If your plan is a swing, the gap is a cost you sized for on purpose, not an accident you discover in the journal on Monday.

A clean end to the day is part of the session plan. Close the platform at a time you chose in the morning. The next trade is not more likely to be good because you are tired and the chart is still open.

Session checklist

Use this before you are allowed to click. It is short because you will skip a long one.

  1. Which session is this, in the clock you wrote down, including the daylight-saving conversion for this week?
  2. Are you inside your allowed window, or are you in Asia "just looking" with the order ticket open?
  3. What is the nearest daily or four-hour level, and is a session high or low sitting on it?
  4. Is a high-impact release inside your no-trade buffer? If yes, the checklist ends.
  5. What is the spread right now, and is it inside the maximum you wrote for this setup?
  6. How many trades have you already taken, and how much R have you lost today?

If any answer is "I don't know," you are early. The Market Sessions view on TradYX is there so questions 1 and 3 are visible on the gold chart instead of reconstructed from a forum post. The checklist is still yours. A shaded session box does not enter the trade, and it does not cancel the loss limit when the overlap feels exciting.

Run the checklist for twenty sessions and tag the results. You will learn whether your overlap trades deserve the word "best," or whether your actual edge is a quieter hour you have been skipping because a video said otherwise. The video is not your sample. The tags are.

FAQ

What is the best time to trade gold?

For most intraday XAUUSD plans, the most active window is the London and New York overlap. That is not a promise of profit. It is when liquidity and scheduled US data most often show up together. Your own journal has to confirm it.

What are XAUUSD trading hours?

Spot gold at retail brokers typically follows the forex week, from Sunday evening New York to Friday evening New York, with a daily break or spread widening around the 5 p.m. New York rollover. Confirm the clock on your platform.

Is the Asian session good for trading gold?

It is often a range-building session rather than a trend session. Many traders mark the Asia high and low and do their trading later, at the London open. Treat that as a hypothesis to log, not as a rule of the metal.

Does daylight saving time change gold hours?

The UTC times of London and New York shift when those cities change clocks, and they do not always change on the same weekend. Write your session times in local exchange time and convert, or you will mark "London" an hour wrong for a few weeks each year.
